Monroe County’s Webster Hotel From Glory Days Still Standing?

By Martha A. Churchill

Mark D. Webster and his wife, Charlotte, were farmers in the municipality of Milan when they decided to enter the hotel business by building a hotel in the village of Milan.

They built their hotel, called the Webster Hotel, on the west side of Wabash Street, just north of the newly constructed railroad.

The late Warren Hale, historian and founder of the Milan Area Historical Society, told me that the Webster Hotel was built around 1905 by Mark D. Webster and his wife. Hale forgot to tell me how he knew the date they built the hotel.

The Websters bought this two-and-a-half-acre site from Harry H. Goethe. According to census information, Goethe lived nearby on Wabash Street with his wife and some small children.
