The last time these two teams played, a rookie took off with a historic performance. Now it’s for the AFC Championship and a trip to the Super Bowl.
The Bengals travel to Kansas City to face the Chiefs in a rematch of a Week 17 game that Cincinnati won 34-31. In that game, rookie wideout Ja’Marr Chase set the NFL record for most receiving yards by a rookie in a single game when he caught 11 passes for 266 yards with three touchdowns. Chase and quarterback Joe Burrow will try to emulate that, but this time the game is played on the go.
The Chiefs are just finishing off their wild division-round victory, in which quarterback Patrick Mahomes and the rest of the attack marched 44 yards down the field to set up an tying field goal in a drive that lasted just 13 seconds. The Chiefs defeated the Bills 42-36 in overtime, but may have taken a serious blow in the process. Star safety Tyrann Mathieu, who moves the team throughout his defensive formations, suffered a concussion. Mathieu returned to practice on Thursday and could be lining up to return. If he can’t go though, it would be a major setback for Kansas City against a strong Bengal outfit.
