It’s a lighter week than usual for Tarleton athletics, an unusual time on the basketball slate with just one game apiece for the men’s and women’s programs.
Tarleton women’s tennis will start the competition with two matches in consecutive days starting on Saturday at Louisiana Tech. They’ll then face Grambling State on Sunday at the same location. On Saturday, the men’s basketball team hosts Chicago State at Wisdom Gym, while the women’s team will play at the Cougars in the afternoon.
TARLETON MBB had a perfect 2-0 set this past week with a 62-57 win at Lamar and a 79-64 victory at UTRGV. On Saturday at 7 pm CT, the Texans will host Chicago State at Wisdom Gym, looking to improve above .500 in conference play, currently 5-5. The Cougars have the third worst record in the WAC at 2-6, and they’re just 6-15 overall. On Tarleton’s side of things, they’re now 10-13 overall after steamrolling the Vaqueros on Saturday. Freddy Hicks scored a career-high 29 points on 10-of-15 shooting, including 3-of-3 from distance, adding four rebounds, two assists and two steals. Also, for the second time in four weeks, Noah McDavid was named the Western Athletic Conference Men’s Basketball Freshman of the Week after averaging 9.5 points and 3.5 rebounds in the pair of games.
TEXAN TENNIS also had a perfect 2-0 set this past week, road winners in Nashville over Lipscomb and Belmont. Against the Bruins, it was a match for the ages, elite tennis played back and forth that culminated in a singles match for the overall team win. Celia Vaudiau had the clinching match to give the Texans the win, letting out a furious cry of victory as her teammates danced around her. Tarleton is now 3-2, all matches coming away from home, with the two losses at the hands of top-20 ranked Power Five programs. They have two more matches on the road trip before finally returning to Stephenville. The Texans will play at Louisiana Tech on Saturday at 11 am CT, followed by a Sunday affair against Grambling State, on the campus of Louisiana Tech, at 2 pm CT. Their originally scheduled Friday match at Tyler Junior College has been canceled.
WOMEN’S BASKETBALL will look to get back on track with a Saturday road game at Chicago State at 1 pm CT. The Cougars own the second worst record in the WAC at 2-6, 3-14 overall. Tarleton had a tough pair of games this past week, not only losing starting center Seynabou Thiami early on, but also losing close single-digit games to Lamar and UTRGV. Iyana Dorsey led the Texans in the first game with 19 points on 6-of-10 shooting, while Nya Mitchells stepped up on Saturday against UTRGV with 13 points and four rebounds, including Tarleton’s first nine points of the game.
