Farmworker organization address misinformation about workers

The Farmworker Association of Florida on Wednesday addressed misinformation that has been circling on social media about workers seen outside a hotel in Maitland. Republican congressional candidate Laura Loomer distributed a video of people exiting a bus and entering an Extended Stay America hotel in Maitland.Loomer claimed the video shows “a bus of Hispanic illegal aliens being (all men) being dropped off in front of an Extended Stay hotel in Maitland where they are being given pre-loaded credit cards, hotel rooms, and clothing.”WESH 2 checked in with Dewar Nurseries and verified the workers are employed through the H-2A program.”These workers were met by protests and derogatory language and the spread of misinformation that both spread unfounded fears and has put more pressure on the already very busy agricultural industry that needs the labor to protect their plant production from recent freezing temperatures,” a release said. “These workers should be welcomed and thanked for their hard work and their courage to come to a new country, and not to be disparaged and maligned.”Representatives said the hatred towards the workers is incited by thos e seeking to use it for political gain. Ann Kendrick, leader of the Hope CommUnity, blasted politicians for using the term “illegal aliens” to describe the workers.”Those are lies. Those are lying statements,” she said. “That was intentional, purposeful, to rise up hate against people of color.” She said it was disgusting and unfair and should be illegal. Kendrick stated that she head people calling the workers “drug dealers” and “violators of women,” saying that is also untrue. She blasted politicians that tweeted misinformation about the workers for not retracting their statements and apologizing. Representatives said the workers have been specifically requested by growers and are delivering food to our tables. “We should be showing gratitude.” One representative blamed Gov. Ron DeSantis for the misinformation and stated he is not leading with a good example.
