GULF SHORES, Ala. – Tiarra Delrosario, Kasey Flores and Brooke Makemsom each had three hits and Lubbock Christian University led 12-2 in West Georgia on Sunday, finishing their time at the Gulf Shores Invitational with their second win of the day.
LCU (2-2) defeated Montevallo 6-1 earlier on Sunday, with top pitcher Taylor Franco throwing five scoreless innings after the Lady Chaps got her five runs in the top of the first inning.
Against West Georgia (1-2), Tyla Lee, Flores and Makemson each drove in a run in a first of five runs and Flores launched a three-run home run in the second for an 8-0 lead. Flores finished with four runs batted in, Lee and Makemson with two apiece.
That supported the pitching of Maxine Valdez (1-1), who gave up two unearned runs on two hits in four innings, and Mattye Tyler, who retired all three batters she faced.
Against Montevallo (2-2), Flores, Lee and Athena Muniz had RBI singles in the first big inning, and Angela Donaldson’s sacrifice fly made it 5-0. Skylar Herrera homered in the third.
Franco (1-1) gave up three hits in five innings, and Chloe Jones threw the last two and gave up a homerun in the seventh to Lauren Higginbotham.
LCU baseball
Arkansas-Fort Smith on Sunday defeated Lubbock Christian University 7-5 in one season and Lone Star Conference opener at Hays Field, building a six-run lead in the middle innings and giving big hits to Blayse Quarnstrom and Hunter Church.
The game was the first of a doubleheader.
A four-run third and a two-run fifth gave UAFS a 6-0 lead, but four of the runs off LCU starter Tyler Hardwick (0-1) were unearned. The Chaparrals committed three errors.
Quarnstrom drove in a run each in the third and fifth, and Church homered in the sixth for a 7-2 lead.
LCU rallied in the sixth with a three-run triple by Jarred Gibson. The goal was scored by Luis Navarro, who had been hit by a pitch, and Larry Leitha and Edgar Acosta, who had walked.
Tech men’s tennis
SALT LAKE CITY — Geronimo Espin, Francisco Bastias and Franco Capalbo won singles in straight sets, leaving Utah 4-0 offside at Texas Tech on Sunday and going undefeated during the spring season.
Although Franco Ribero and Ilgiz Valiev of Texas Tech No. 3 won doubles, Utah won the best-of-three doubles and then the first three singles matches to finish.
Espin defeated Olle Wallin 6-2, 6-3; Bastias defeated Valiev 6-3, 6-3; and Capalbo defeated Isaac Arevalo 6-3, 6-2.
Utah moved to 8-0 and Tech dropped to 4-3.
Technical track and field
ALBUQUERQUE, NM — Texas Tech newcomer Vashaun Vascianna won the men’s 60-meter hurdles in the New Mexico Collegiate Classic on Saturday with a time ranking fourth in NCAA Division I this season.
Vascianna, a freshman from Kingston, Jamaica, ran a time of 7.64 seconds, converted to 7.66 seconds to account for Albuquerque’s elevation of more than 5,000 feet above sea level.
Tech’s Maliek Kendall finished third in 7.91.
In the women’s triple jump, Tech’s Ruta Lasmane and Onaara Obamuwagun finished first and second with 44 feet, 9 3/4 inches and 44-0, respectively. Obamuwagun’s mark was a personal best.
Tech also took first place from Knowledge Omovoh in the 400m and from Chloe Wall in the pole vault. Omovoh ran a personal best of 52.95 and Wall cleared 13-11 3/4.
The Red Raiders are back home for the Texas Tech Shootout on Friday and Saturday.
WBU basketball
PLAINVIEW – Thad Udoh scored 22 points and Wayland Baptist recovered from an early deficit to beat Oklahoma City University 70-57 in a game of the Sooner Athletic Conference Saturday at Hutcherson Center.
Oklahoma City (13-11, 12-5) were inside 60-57 before Udoh scored the last 10 points of the game.
Wayland (13-11, 9-8) got 16 points from RJ Mason, 11 from Josh Servanez and 10 from Dylan McDougal.
Pioneer center Jibrael Washington had a career-best nine blocked shots for the second game in a row. The Waco 6-foot-8 senior has 167 blocked shots in his career, breaking the previous Wayland career record of 158 from 1998 to 2001 by Deng D’Awol.
Wayland will host John Brown in a doubleheader on Monday, with the women’s game starting at 5 p.m. and the men’s game at 7 p.m.
