Attorney general details alleged hotel scam in northern Michigan – The Oakland Press

Dana Nessel’s office has notified three hotels in Mackinaw City of its intention to file a complaint against them for allegedly scamming customers.

The Michigan Attorney General’s office investigated after consumer complaints against three hotels: the Beach House Hotel, Crown Choice Inn and Suites, and Hamilton Inn Select Beachfront.

The office issued a Notice of Intended Action to the three, accusing them of deceptive business practices related to their taking of customer reservations.

The three are accused of letting reservations be made with hotels that ended up being closed, and customers could not cancel because the confirmation came days later and within the 72-hour limit to cancel without payment.

“Tourism is part of the life-blood for the economy in northern Michigan,” Nessel said in a statement. “Whether it’s our residents enjoying a long weekend, or visitors coming to experience our majestic sand dunes, beaches, lakes or ski slopes, it is important that all consumers are treated fairly so they look forward to sharing joyful stories with future visitors.

“My office will not tolerate actions that threaten our reputation in the tourism industry or harm consumers.”
