New travel rule changes have been brought in just in time for February half term meaning many people will be eager to book a quick get away. UK arrivals will no longer have to take a PCR test meaning that only pre departure forms will be required. But while the UK relaxes restrictions, Omicron and the threat of coronavirus is still a worry for many other countries who continue to implement tight restrictions on international travel.
The changes will mean passengers will also no longer be required to present a negative test on arrival – but only if they had been jabbed. It will be over the next few days that the new rules will come into place.
It’s important to be aware of any rules and tests before booking a flight. Here’s everything you need to know about traveling to Australia, USA, Mexico and Japan.

Until 21 February 2022, entry to Australia is only available if you are exempt or have been granted an individual exemption. Exempt categories include Australian citizens, permanent residents of Australia, immediate family members of Australian citizens or permanent residents, and fully vaccinated holders of eligible visas.
It’s also important to check the state rules in which you’ll arrive as they may differ and quarantine may be required. A negative COVID-19 PCR test result is required for traveling to or transiting through Australia regardless of vaccination status. You are also required to complete an Australia Travel Declaration (ATD) at least 72 hours before departure.
If you are unvaccinated you will be required an exemption to enter Australia.
Most fully vaccinated foreign citizens can enter the USA providing you can show proof of your vaccination status. Before boarding a flight to the USA, most passengers – regardless of vaccination status – are required to show a negative COVID-19 test result taken no more than 1 day before travel. All air passengers to the USA are also required to provide contact information to their airlines before boarding.
If you’re unvaccinated then you will need an exemption to enter the US. If you’re not fully vaccinated but have tested positive for COVID-19 in the last year you still cannot enter the USA.
All passengers will need to register on the Mexico Vuela Seguro Platform before boarding your flight to Mexico, and to show the QR code upon arrival at the airport.
If you’re visiting Mexico as a tourist you don’t need a visa, but you’ll need to complete an immigration form and have this with you when you enter and leave Mexico. There is no need to provide a negative PCR test or quarantine on arrival, though most resorts ask guests to fill out health questionnaires. There are health screenings at airports.
International travelers are still not allowed to enter Japan for any purpose, other than in exceptional circumstances. You can find a description of exceptional circumstances on the Ministry of Foreign Affairs website †
