NATCHITOCHES, La. – The HBU women’s basketball team earned their third road win of the season Thursday night as they pulled away late from the Northwestern State Lady Demon’s Thursday evening inside of Prather Coliseum.
The Huskies (10-9, 6-2 SLC) got off to a good start, outscoring the Lady Demons 8-2 over the final four minutes of the first quarter. Julija Vujakovic and Enya Maguire each knocked down big three pointers to get the Huskies out to their early lead. The second quarter saw the Huskies revert to a similar offensive output they had against Southwestern last Saturday. The Huskies shot just 25 percent from the floor (3-12 FG) while allowing 46.2 percent of the Lady Demons shots to fall. Northwestern State quickly got out of the four point hole and found themselves with a 24-20 lead heading into halftime.
The Huskies used second half defense and trips to the free throw line to push themselves past Northwestern. The Huskies held the Lady Demon’s to just 18 second half points and shot 11-14 from the line to get the job done.
In the third quarter, the Husky defense allowed just 16.7 percent of their opponent’s shots to fall. They closed the quarter out on an 11-3 run to regain the lead they lost in the second. The scoring was evenly spread out across the roster, with five different Huskies dropping into baskets in the period.
The Lady Demons had some fight left in them heading into the fourth quarter, as they erased the HBU lead just two minutes into the quarter. N’Denasija Collins would knock down a pair of free throws before made buckets from Julija Vujakovic and Lauryn Mapusua gave the Huskies another five point lead with six minutes to play. The Huskies always had an answer to any late run the Lady Demon’s tried to put together. A made bucket from Monette Bolden cut the Husky lead to three. The Huskies were done playing games, as they turned on the defense and closed the game on a 9-2 run to walk away winners, 52-42.
This is the fourth consecutive game the Huskies have won against the Lady Demons dating back to the start of the 2020-21 season.
“I am glad to have gotten a win as Northwestern State played so so hard today. We did a good job of containing them in transition for the majority of the game which was a key for us, but didn’t rebound the ball hard enough and gave them second chances,” head coach Donna Finnie said after the game. “Coach Nimz does a great job and that team will be tough to beat in Katy for whoever faces them.”
In the game, Collins led all scorers with 12 points while collecting seven boards and forcing two turnovers. She was also a perfect 6-6 from the foul line. Maguire and Vujakovic each scored 11 and each shot 3-7 from behind the arc. Maguire stuffed the stat sheet to the tune of seven assists, six rebounds, and a steal to go along with her 11 points. Vujakovic added four boards, two assists, and three steals. Abbey Sutherland had a team high eight rebounds to go along with her four points while Timia Jefferson added six points and three rebounds.
The Huskies continue their tour of the Bayou State on Saturday afternoon when they travel to Southeastern to take on the top ranked Lions. That game will be aired on ESPN+ and an audio broadcast from HBU’s Garrett Jones can be found on HBUHuskies.com.
