ST. GEORGE — Utah high school students and those who want to pursue a college education can continue joining an internship program in the hotel and tourism industries. HB 43, Hospitality and Tourism Management CTE Pilot Program Sunset Extension, has passed and is on its way for the governor’s signature.

The program is known as the Keys to Success. According to the bill’s sponsor, Rep. Melissa Ballard, the legislature granted its extension since the project lost two years to the pandemic.

“It provides internships and apprenticeships for high school students in the hotel and tourism industries. Utah has been expanding internship and apprenticeships across the state for high schoolers,” Ballard said.

The program was originally only for high schoolers. In 2021, the Keys to Success adult portal was launched to support adults in their paths towards college and career readiness.

The program was launched in 2004 when the Ken Garff Family decided to help the Utah Education System. The family created Success in Education, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that launched the program.

Keys to Success also developed a mobile application used with Utah College Advising Corps. The app helps students earn and redeem points for prizes by researching pertinent information on scholarships, internships, and college.

“As of right now, we are seeing 92,500 plus students enrolled and reaping the benefits of this app’s ability to eventually give scholarships, tuition assistance, and tuition waivers,” according to the Utah System of Higher Education website.

Over $160 million scholarship/tuition waivers are available on the Keys to Success app. The Keys to Success has grown immensely in the past two decades and is now open to middle schools, high schools, and higher education institutions across the state of Utah. Their website says the program has evolved with the development of a mobile app and the introduction of prizes and incentives to reward students for their steps towards college and career readiness.
