Spring is the favorite travel season for many since you can avoid the hot summer temperatures and the massive crowds that accompany summer trips. Here are several places you might take a spring vacation to explore the United States or have a relaxing escape overseas.
St. Petersburg, Florida
While international travel restrictions are easing, traveling within the United States can still be more accessible. Plus, you can spend less time traveling and keep your costs low if you’re still saving for a summer trip.
As a result, a beach trip can be a good spring vacation destination. A Florida beach can be your best bet as the weather is warm yet mild. You can also enjoy non-beach activities nearby.
ft. Lauderdale, Panama City or the Florida Keys may come to mind when you think of Florida beaches. Instead, you can have a pleasant time at St. Petersburg just outside of Tampa. The prices can be more budget-friendly and the experience more casual than other destinations.
This barrier island is home to St. Pete Beach and Clearwater Beach. There are many things to do nearby, including several art museums and nature preserves. You’re also only two hours away from Orlando if you also want to squeeze in a visit to Disney World, Universal Studios or Legoland.
Gatlinburg is a popular mountain getaway in eastern Tennessee. It’s easy to drive or fly from much of the eastern or southern United States.
You can enjoy the scenery of the Smoky Mountains by renting a cabin or finding a hotel with a scenic view. The Great Smoky Mountains National Park is free to visit and offers plenty of hiking and driving trails.
There are plenty of tourist attractions and shopping opportunities in Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge. Some of the theme parks open during the spring include Anakeesta and Ober Gatlinburg.
While many people love Gatlinburg, it is a popular tourist destination. If you simply want to take in the mountain allure with smaller crowds, North Carolina’s Blowing Rock or Georgia’s Helen is also worth considering if they’re easier for you to reach.
New Orleans can be a pleasant spring getaway as you can avoid the big crowds that come out for Mardi Gras and St. Patrick’s Day. You can also take advantage of the seasonable weather.
N’awlins is a party city, but it has a rich culture that’s present year-round. For example, you can enjoy creole cooking, a stroll through the French Quarter or rest in one of the city’s scenic parks.
The city has several spring music festivals that can be enjoyable. You may also enjoy taking a jazz cruise one evening.
Plus, it’s now easier to visit New Orleans as the city mask mandate ended on March 3, 2022. The vaccine mandate for select businesses expires on March 21, 2022, so long as the health situation continues to improve.
Kansas City, Missouri
The southern midwest can be an excellent place to head to if heading to the East Coast or West Coast isn’t feasible. Kansas City offers several exciting activities. For example, Legoland is open each day, but you must reserve your slot in advance. You can also enjoy museums and Union Station.
Las Vegas is another fun destination to enjoy in the spring as you’re not under duress from the extreme summer heat.
While most people associate this city as a destination for gambling, plenty of attractions don’t require counting cards or playing slots. Although, you might see if luck is on your side at least once during your visit. For example, you may enjoy walking through the various casino resorts on The Strip to enjoy the architecture and other unique attractions.
Several of note include:
- Fountains of Bellagio
- Eiffel Tower viewing deck
- Mirage Volcano (this attraction is undergoing demolition soon)
- High Roller Ferris Wheel
- The Mob Museum
- Celebrity shows
If it’s been a while since you have been to Vegas, or it’s time to show your children some of your favorite city memories, be sure to check out the Mirage Volcano. This attraction has been a city staple since 1989, but it’s slated for demolition soon.
Sports fans can also enjoy watching a match from hometown professional hockey team, the Las Vegas Golden Knights.
In addition to these attractions within the city, there are a few iconic outdoor attractions. For example, the Grand Canyon is two hours away, and the Hoover Dam is a 40-minute drive. You can take hiking, biking and helicopter tours to enjoy the great outdoors.
Lake Tahoe is an outdoor paradise straddling the California and Nevada state line. Several ski resorts are extending the ski season through late April if weather conditions permit. Lake Tahoe State Park on the Nevada side or Emerald Bay State Park in California can be your basecamp if you want to explore outdoor trails around the lake.
Sedona, AZ, is a fun and relaxing getaway if you’re an outdoor enthusiast or just want a break from city life. There are plenty of hiking trails for outdoor activity. You may also enjoy driving the 10-mile-long Red Rock Scenic Byway. Relaxing at a winery is another pleasurable escapade.
You’re also just a little over two hours away from the Grand Canyon National Park if you don’t want to miss this natural wonder.
Palm Springs, California
Palm Springs lets you enjoy the high Sonoran Desert, which can be lovely in the spring. It can also be a welcome respite from the Los Angeles or San Diego metroplexes. Joshua Tree National Park is nearby and is one of the most popular activities. Timing your visit in April means you’re more likely to see the picturesque desert blooms.
Non-essential travel to Europe is welcome again. While there are many destinations to choose from, Rome can be fantastic from mid-March until mid-May before the summer heat arrives. You get to enjoy the Mediterranean climate, excellent food and over 2,000 years of history. Round-trip flights are still reasonable as well, making a Eurotrip budget-friendly.
Punta Cana, Dominican Republic
While Cancun and the Bahamas garner the most attention, Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic can offer a similar experience. There are several all inclusive resorts to visit and enjoy the pristine beaches.
The Dominican Republic entry requirements for tourists are also lenient. For example, you won’t have to obtain a pre-arrival travel test, show proof of vaccination or get a travel visa like other Caribbean destinations. However, in-airport health screenings are still occurring.
Whether you vacation nearby or venture a little further, these destinations can bring plenty of excitement. Plus, there are fewer travel restrictions than last spring, making it easier to plan a trip. Now it’s time to pack your bags and hit the road or head to the airport gate.
