Cassi Roman’s Big Florida Trip Earns Her MEC Softball Weekly Honors

Wheeling, W. Va. – Over the last week, the Wheeling University Softball team was down in Winter Haven, Florida as they played through their 2022 spring trip schedule. Over the eight games, they went 3-5, including a double header sweep in the opener, as they prepare for Mountain East Conference (MEC) play. The hard work of one Cardinal has paid off as Cassi Roman was named this week’s MEC Softball Player of the Week, leading the Wheeling offense with 12 RBI.

During the eight-game stretch, Roman was on fire at the plate, going 10-27 (.370) with three home runs and 12 RBI in Winter Haven, Florida. With the effort, Roman now leads the Cardinals with 12 RBI this season and leads the conference in that category as well. Her three home runs rank second in the conference behind Frostburg State’s Jayla Hill. After serving as the DP through the first three games of the season, the sophomore has found a home at shortstop and is making the most of her opportunities at the plate and in the field.

Her biggest performance came right at the start of the spring trip when Wheeling handed Bloomfield College a 16-7 loss. Roman was an impressive 4-5 in that game with a home run, four RBI, and scored two runs in the game. Roman’s home run came in the top of the fourth inning and broke what at the time was a 1-1 tie. It was Roman’s first home run of the season and was the catalyst for her week as she would homer in the game later that day against Ashland and added another bomb in the game against Edinboro on Thursday.

Roman had two four-RBI games during the week, with the other coming against Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) opponent Edinboro. In that game, she went 3-4 with a home run, two doubles, two runs scored, and four RBI. Her home run against the Scots initiated the eight-run rule when she lifted a two-run home run in the top of the seventh that made it a 9-0 game, the score that the team would eventually win by. Roman had at least one RBI in five of the eight games as she had a breakout week for Wheeling.

Roman is the 25th Wheeling University Student-Athlete to win weekly honors this season and is the third member of the Wheeling Softball team to be recognized. She is also the third Player of the Week Award winner this week, as Men’s Lacrosse’s Joshua Wolford and Mike Andersson were recognized for their efforts by the Great Midwest Athletic Conference (GMAC) earlier this week.

The Wheeling University Softball team will return to action this Saturday, March 19th, when they open MEC play against Alderson Broaddus with game one scheduled for 12 pm, followed by game two at 2 PM.
