Arizonans Can Now Use Digital IDs To Board Flights

PHOENIX — Arizonans can now use a digital version of their driver’s license or state identification card to verify their identities at some TSA checkpoints at Sky Harbor International Airport.

Arizona was the first state in the nation to begin this digital ID program, which kicked off Wednesday, according to a news release from the Arizona Department of Transportation Motor Vehicle Division. At present, the TSA is only accepting digital IDs saved on Apple devices via Apple Wallet.

The division said that the program was part of its commitment to reduce wait times at MVD branches and to offer customers more digital options.

“With this technology, Arizonans are at the front of the line for experiencing a streamlined airport security process,” Gov. Doug Ducey said in the news release. “This puts our state at the leading edge of a new technology that offers choice, convenience, privacy and security.”

Arizona introduced its mobile ID app around a year ago, in March 2021. This app allows users with Apple or Android devices to prove their age to buy drinks or cigarettes by using a digital ID.

“Arizona is proud to be the first state to give our residents the choice to add their ID to Apple Wallet,” Arizona MVD Director Eric Jorgensen said. “We will continue to seek out opportunities for products and services that provide Arizonans security, privacy and ease of use.”

Only select TSA checkpoints are currently accepting Apple Wallet digital IDs, but the DOT expects the use of digital IDs to grow.

Arizonans, whether using their digital ID to board a plane or buy a drink, are encouraged to continue carrying their physical ID card for the time being, especially in case they need to provide identification to law enforcement.
